Precision Glass Molded Aspheric Lenses

Hexagon Optics uses a modern approach to precision glass molded aspheres. Using state-of-the-art progressive molding machines, we can rapidly produce high-quality aspheres with exceptional consistency. These machines are engineered for high-volume production but also provide the adaptability needed for low-volume runs, giving customers unmatched flexibility in scaling their designs.

Unlike traditional fixed-die molding systems, progressive tooling is designed for scalability, which keeps initial tooling costs low while allowing seamless scale-up to high-volume production. Once fully tooled, a progressive molding machine can provide a finished precision asphere in as little as every 80 seconds, combining speed, efficiency and quality to meet the demands of both prototyping and large-scale manufacturing.

Scaling What’s Possible, Not Just Small Lenses

Today, Hexagon Optics can mold precision glass aspheres up to 45+ mm in diameter, enabling high-resolution imaging across industrial, medical, defense and scientific applications. With even larger-diameter molding capability scheduled for next year, we continue to expand the boundaries of molded optics, giving our customers greater design freedom, higher performance and a clearer path from prototype to full-rate production.

More than 2 or 3 Materials to Choose From

Hexagon Optics offers optics from wide range of optical glasses formulated specifically for precision aspheric lens molding. These materials are engineered to optimize molding performance, reduce cycle times, extend mold life, and improve production consistency without compromising optical quality. Many moldable glasses match or exceed the hardness and optical properties of traditional glasses. Choosing the right material is a key factor in achieving high-performance aspheric optics, and our team provides guidance to ensure optimal selection for every design.

A common misconception is that moldable glasses are inherently softer or lower performing. While this may be true for certain compositions, there are many cases where a moldable formulation exhibits equal or even greater hardness and durability than its conventional counterpart, while still delivering comparable refractive and dispersion properties. In addition to a broad portfolio of moldable oxide glasses, Hexagon Optics also supports radiation-resistant glasses and chalcogenide materials for infrared systems.

Material selection is often one of the most critical design decisions in any optical system. Our team maintains an extensive library of glasses and when a new formulation is required, qualifying a material we have not previously molded is both fast and cost-effective. If you need guidance navigating the options, our engineers are ready to help you select the optimal glass for your desired applications.
